Wolds Wonder
When it comes to pushing the boundaries of crop performance, Tim Lamyman of Lamyman Worlaby Farms, Louth, is no stranger to the spotlight. This season, he’s done it again, setting a new world record yield of 7.52 tonnes per hectare for oilseed rape, nearly three times the UK’s 2024 national average.
Grown high on the Lincolnshire Wolds, the record-breaking crop stood over two metres tall with a thick, unbroken canopy—a testament to Lamyman’s meticulous agronomy and innovative approach.
So, what was the secret behind this extraordinary result?
Smart Timing and Strategic Inputs
One of the key decisions was delaying drilling until late September, a move that helped the crop dodge the usual threat of cabbage stem flea beetle damage. This tactical delay gave the crop a cleaner start and reduced early pest pressure.
But it wasn’t just about timing. An early application of a growth-stimulating foliar feed in the autumn gave the crop a powerful boost. Tim described the early growth as “spectacular,” setting the stage for a high-performing canopy and ultimately, a record-breaking harvest. With a 40% oil content – it’s a perfect formula.
Fuelling the Record: The Power of Crop Nutrition
Tim Lamyman’s latest success isn’t just a triumph of timing and technique—it’s also a testament to the impact of smart crop nutrition. A key part of his strategy was investing in Bionature, a specialist nutrition programme that played a vital role in achieving such exceptional results.
