UK-Wide housing measures introduced for poultry and captive birds

New measures coming into force on Monday 29th November mean that all bird keepers across the UK will be required by law to keep their birds indoors where possible, or separated from wild birds to limit the spread of Avian flu.

In light of this, the government have advised extra precautions be taken including the regular cleaning and disinfecting of areas and equipment to prevent contamination, whilst limiting external visitors and non-essential workers in areas where birds are kept.

The public are advised to avoid touching or handling any sick or dead birds, instead report this to the DEFRA helpline on 03459 33 55 77.

Bird keepers should report concerns to the following helplines:

  • England (Defra Rural Services Helpline): 03000 200 301
  • Wales (Defra Rural Services Helpline): 0300 303 8268
  • Scotland: Contact your local Field Services Office
  • Northern Ireland (DAERA):  0300 200 7840
